Luxury sailing yacht AELLO was built in Hamburg in 1921 by Max Oertz, the most famous German naval architect and shipbuilder of his time. Oertz built the famous imperial schooners 'Germania' and 'Meteor IV' for German Kaiser Wilhelm II. AELLO, sistership to 'Meteor IV', was built for the account of a Greek merchant, art collector and public benefactor, Antonis Benakis a descendent of an illustrious Greek family of Alexandria, Eygpt. He was the founder and first president of the Yacht club of Greece and AELLO was its first yacht member. To this day one can see engraved on her beautiful bronze wheel the initials of the yacht club. AELLO was later acquired by a Baron and Admiral of the British Empire who began a lengthy voyage around the world that spanned over many years, travelling as far as Singapore. AELLO traces disappeared during WWII. Fourty years later, in 1985, AELLO was discovered abandoned in the mud berth of a river of England. A lengthy restoration that lasted for more than four years was undertaken in Bristol and Southampton by Britain's most skilled craftsmen. In the 90's AELLO found its way to the East coast of NORTH AMERICA as she was acquired by a member of one of America's most famous families of industrialists. There she was groomed and perfected to become the ultimate racehorse, winning many international regattas. More than 80yrs away from her original home, AELLO was at last acquired by a Greek ship owner who brought her back to Greece where she enjoys her former glory, sailing in the Mediterranean sea.
